LIFE STORY OF LEW XIN MEN

I come from a very poor family.  My father could not afford to buy a house.  He rented a small room for our family of seven. This room had to share only one light of 10 watts in the centre with another family living in the room next door.  The Landlord did not allow us to install more than one light.
During that time I could not have a proper place to pray.  I put up a small box above my double decker bed to place a small Buddha image and Kuan Im photograph to pray.  I opened up the box when I prayed in the morning and at night and closed up the box thereafter.  Our room leaked badly when it rained but the Landlord did not allow us to carry out any repairs.  We had to use several pails to collect the rain water.  Whenever, I prayed, I cried and appealed to Buddha and Kuan Im for my father to be able to buy a small house for our family.  Eventually he managed to buy a small house for us.

In spite of being so poor, during my teenage years I already know how to do charity work.   During that time our family could not even afford to buy any new clothes for Chinese New Year.  I met a monk who was very ill.  I stole one gold coin from my mother and pawned it to buy medicine for this monk.  When my mother found out she beat me and said that we are already so poor and yet I could help others.

When I was twenty-one years of age I wanted to practice monkhood.  My parents objected.  I went to Wat Phoo Phor in Thailand for my three months’ monkhood without their knowledge.  I told my parents that I went away to work.

After my three months monkhood, I came back to Penang to work.  I started doing charitable work and gradually became successful.  I carried out numerous fund raising projects for several temples and was also involved in social work.  I also conducted special prayers for many old and poor people who were very ill and suffering.  I chanted for them special pali prayers for them to recover quickly and if their times are up, to leave the world peacefully.  I also helped to conduct their last rites.  I purchased coffins for them and also invited monks to pray for them.  Those who informed me during their lifetime that they wanted to have their ashes put in a niche in a columbarium, I purchased the niches for them.  Those who wanted to have their ashes thrown into the sea, I rented a boat and personally conducted special prayers for them  before throwing their ashes into the sea.  After having conducted prayers for so many people, I understand their famly problems.

When the old folks introduced by me to any of the old folks home passes away I will arrange and pay from my personal funds for their funeral expenses (costing several thousand Malaysian Ringgit per person) which cost of coffins, cremation expenses, prayer ceremonies including chanting by monks, purchase food, etc. and also arrange to rent a boat for their ashes to be scattered into the sea (if that is their last wish).  Otherwise niches will be purchased to place their ashes in the respective Crematorium..  Sometimes, friends also recommend  to me  to attend to the last rites of destitutes.  I also pay for the funeral expenses of these destitutes.  If their last wish is for their ashes to be scattered into the sea, I shall rent a boat to attend to the ceremony.  If their last wish is for their ashes to be kept in urns I shall purchase the niches for them.
To date I have already donated over 1,000 coffins in Penang and Thailand for use by the poor who die and their families could not afford to purchase coffins for them.

For example, the parents had bequethed to the children a lump some of money and properties.  However, the children did not do the last rites properly for their parents because they wanted to save money because of their family problems such as financial problems, pressure from work, they need money for their children's education, the children are not in harmony, etc.  Therefore, the souls of the deceased could not find their way to Nirvana.

16. I donated one gold plated coffin to Wat Phoo Phor Temple for the body of a deceased to be placed inside temporarily during the funeral ceremony.  Thereafter, the dead body is taken out and placed inside the crematorium to be cremated.  This coffin will be re-cycled and used to put other dead bodies.  I also helped to build a crematorium for the Temple to cremate the dead.  This Temple does not charge the poor for cremating the dead.  As this Temple is situated in the outskirts of Haatyai and is very poor and did not have electricity at the time when I went there for my temporary monkhood, I also personally donated a generator to supply electricity to the whole Temple.

Mypresent dream and wish is to organise the "Shui Lu" Ceremony for everyone who participate to benefit from it.  The participants will be able to see for themselves during their lifetime this living "Kong Teik".  While they are alive they will benefit from this "Kong Teik" with good health, good luck, happiness, peace and prosperity.  When it is time for them to leave this world they will leave peacefully and go straight to Nirvana without having to worry whether their children will carry out their last rites properly.

Whenever, I prayed during the Water, Land and Air Harmony Assemblies, and Cheow Thor Ceremonies, I included the names of all those whom I had helped to carry out their last rites even though they are not related to me.  I also included the names of all those who had helped me in the fund raising for all my various temples projects.
My last and biggest Project in the world is to conduct the Water, Land and Air Harmony Assembly (“Shui Lu" Ceremony) in Penang.  It will last about twelve (12) days.  The "Shui Lu" Ceremony is normally held in conjunction with the opening of new temples for their fund raising.  Very few people can afford to join this Ceremony as they have to pay a few thousand Malaysian Ringgit to participate.  Some time ago I met an old lady who was very keen to enter a temple to participate in the "Shui Lu" Ceremony.  However, the High Priest of this temple would not allow her to enter the Prayer Hall as she could not afford to pay.  Therefore, I made a vow that when I have the opportunity I will carry out the "Shui Lu" Ceremony in Penang for everyone to participate without having to pay.

***********************************************************
History of "Shui Lu" Ceremony
The "Shui Lu" Ceremony originated during the Tang Dynasty, where a disciple to Buddha, Ananda met Yama, the King of Death, to offer food for the hungry ghosts, to pay homage to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha (triple gems), to benefit hell dwellers.  Subsequently, Emperor Liang Wu Ti conserved the Ceremony until today.

In "Shui Lu" Ceremony, our main purpose is to pray and pay homage to Bodhisattvas and Buddhas from the ten directions.  With the compassion of all the Buddhas, we transfer merits dedicated for world peace and harmony for all countries and people.  We also dedicate the merits to remove misfortune and protect the next generation.  Lastly, the Ceremony aims to benefit all the spirits of hell, hungry ghosts, animals kingdom, human beings, devas and deities.

***********************************************************
I had been involved in many fund raising projects for many temples.  During such projects I met many devotees with many personal problems.  Therefore, I feel that it would be great if I could organize the "Shui Lu" Ceremony for everyone to pray and pay homage to Bodhisattvas and Buddhas from the ten directions.

At the beginning of the "Shui Lu" Ceremony, we shall carry out several charities.  This will be followed by Sangkhdana to 1,000 monks.  Therefore, when we conduct the "Shui Lu" prayers, we shall be transferring these merits to "Shui Lu".

We hope that with the prayers and charitable work done during the "Shui Lu" Ceremony all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will have loving kindness and compassion and with their power will bring all the dead to Nirvana.

I fervently pray and appeal to the millions of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas   for me to be able to carry out my last project successfully not for myself but for everyone in the world to have peace, harmony and with Bodhisattvas and Buddhas’s mercy and compassion not to allow so many lives to be lost due to calamities such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, fires, volcanoes, illnesses, etc.  After this last Project, I shall not get involved in fund raising for temples again as I feel that I have done enough and shall let the younger generation  be involved and gain the benefits.

I shall not ask for contributions from all those who participate in this "Shui Lu" Ceremony.

The funding for organising this "Shui Lu" Ceremony will come from my personal collection of 400 sets of 3 images each of Luang Pu Thuad  (Gold Mix) which are more than ten years old (Buddhist Lunar Year 29 July 2545) from Wat Kuhasawan, Phattalung, Thailand.  Luang Pu Thuad was a very famous monk in Thailand.  He is equivalent to the Goddess of Mercy - "Kuan Im".  Nearly 95% of homes and temples in Thailand pay homage to the image of Luang Pu Thuad.  Wat Kuhasawan Temple
does not have any more of this Luang Pu Thuad (Gold Mix) images as  I had been appointed on 29 March 2002 by the Chief Abbot of Kuhasawan Monastery, Kuhasawan Sub. Dist., Muang District, Phatthalung, Thailand as the only authorized agent to sell throughout South East Asia and nobody else is allowed to carry out such sale without my permission.  A copy of this authority letter is attached.

Those who are interested to support this "Shui Lu" Ceremony can donate RM5,000/- for one set of Luang Pu Thuad.  All collections from these 400 sets of Luang Pu Thuad (Gold Mix) which are donated by me will be totally used for the expenses for this "Shui Lu" Ceremony, Sangkhana for 1,000 monks and Charitable Projects and the balance will be given to charities.  All collections from the public ("Sway Yen") will also be given to charities.  Therefore, this "Shui Lu" Ceremony is 100% non-profitable.

Luang Pu Thuad Pak Kring (Gold Mix)
Only 600 sets were made in
Wat Kuhasawan, Muang District, Pattalung, Thailand in the Buddhist Lunar Year 2545.

Those who donate RM5,000/-  for each set of the 400 sets of Luang Pu Thuad will be entitled to 5 lighting for the living and “Cheow Thor” for 5 deceased.  I shall also include the names of these 400 supporters on the "Thong Thean Peow" which will be burnt and sent to Jade Emperor and all the millions of Buddhas to bless them and their families with happiness, prosperity, good health, achieve success in everything they do and they will  have safety in travelling.  This "Thong Thean Peow" was used by the emperors during ancient times and could not be used for laymen.  This "Thong Thean Peow" had been taught to me by my Master and these 400 supporters will be lucky to benefit from the blessings from the Jade Emperor and the millions of Buddhas.

During the Shui Lu Ceremony the following will also be held :-
-        Sangkhadana to 1,000 monks
-        Offer free medical check up and medicine to the poor
-        Blood donation
-        Give red packets and food packets to the poor
-        Release animals to liberate lives
-        Eye test and donation of free spectacles to the poor
-        Dharma talk
-        The balance will be given to charitable organisations

If I am successful in carrying out the "Shui Lu" Ceremony mentioned above I sincerely thank all my supporters and helpers.  God willing, should I be able to carry out this "Shui Lu" Ceremony I shall need at least  1,000 volunteers to help in cooking, decorations, filling up "Cheow Thor" forms, guiding traffic, serving monks, etc

I am pleased to mention that the Chief Monk of the The Buddhist Triple Wisdom Hall has kindly confirmed that he will allow me to use the new Buddhist Triple Wisdom Building at 5, Pangkor Road, 10050 Penang free of charge to conduct the "Shui Lu" Ceremony and I am very thankful to him to carry out the"Shui Lu" Ceremony jointly with me.  I hope I am able to carry out this Project from 29th May 2013 to 9th June 2013, when my funds permit.

The following temples* have been appointed as Advisors for the "Shui Lu" Ceremony to be held from 29th May 2013 to 9th June 2013 :
